Overview
The Embassy keeps the civil status records of Burkinabè nationals residing in its jurisdiction: it registers births and celebrates marriages.
Birth declaration
A birth must be declared within two (2) months of the day of birth (Article 106 of the Code of Persons and the Family). The declaration is made by one of the parents or by any other person who was present at the birth, on presentation of the declarant's identity document. It gives rise to the issue of a full copy of the birth certificate and an extract.
Marriage
The application to celebrate a marriage is made in the presence of both future spouses, accompanied by their witnesses. They fill in a form and provide the documents listed in the Required documents tab. The marriage is celebrated after the publication of the banns; the consular section will tell you the time frame when you submit the file.
Required documents
- One (1) photocopy of the father's and the mother's identity documents
- One (1) photocopy of the birth certificate of each parent
- One (1) photocopy of the birth attestation issued by the hospital
Time limit: within two (2) months of the birth.
Both future spouses come with their witnesses and provide:
- an application for marriage;
- a certificate of publication of the banns or of non-opposition;
- a birth certificate extract or certified photocopy for each future spouse, or the supplementary judgment replacing it (or its certified copy);
- a certified photocopy of the identity document (passport, CNIB or CIC) of each future spouse;
- a certificate of residence for each future spouse;
- a pre-marital medical certificate for each future spouse, issued by a doctor;
- a certified photocopy of the witnesses' identity documents;
- a certificate of non-pregnancy, where applicable;
- an administrative authorization from the applicant's superior, where applicable;
- the consent of the father and the mother, or of the person exercising parental authority, where applicable;
- the matrimonial regime chosen by the future spouses and, where applicable, a copy of the marriage contract;
- where applicable, the declaration of the polygamy option made before the marriage.
The marriage is celebrated after the publication of the banns.
