Studying in India
Scholarships, formalities, universities and mutual help: everything a Burkinabè student needs to know before and during studies in India.
Every year, Burkinabè students join Indian universities, often thanks to the scholarships of the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR). The Embassy supports them: information before departure, consular registration, legalization of documents and assistance in case of difficulty.
Register with the Embassy as soon as you arrive: it is free and lets us reach you in an emergency.
Studying in India, step by step
-
Before leaving
Get admitted to a university
Apply directly to the university or through the ICCR scholarship portal. Keep the admission letter: it is required for the visa.
-
Before leaving
Get the student visa
The Indian student visa is requested from India's diplomatic mission or on the official Indian visa portal, with the admission letter and proof of funding.
-
Before leaving
Prepare documents and health
International yellow fever vaccination certificate, health insurance, copies of the passport and diplomas (keep a digital copy).
-
On arrival
Register with the FRRO
Students must register with the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO), online, within 14 days of arrival. The university helps you with it.
-
On arrival
Register with the Embassy
Online consular registration takes five minutes. It lets the Embassy reach you in a crisis and makes issuing your documents easier.
-
During studies
Keep your papers valid
Watch the expiry dates of your passport, visa and residence permit. Passport renewal is requested from the Embassy several months in advance.
-
After studies
Have your diplomas legalized
Before going home, have your diplomas legalized so that they are recognised in Burkina Faso, and report your departure to the FRRO.

Questions from students
The student visa does not allow paid employment. Internships that are part of your programme are possible: ask your university.
Ask the Embassy for a renewal at least six months before expiry: apply online, then book an appointment for the fingerprints. Your visa and FRRO registration will then need to be updated.
It is voluntary and free, but strongly recommended: in a crisis, the Embassy can only help the people it knows about.
First have the diploma authenticated by the relevant Indian authorities, then have it legalized at the Embassy before you leave. Book an appointment for the “Legalization” service.
