Frequently asked questions

About Us

  • Why should I register with the consulate?

The vast majority of Burkinabè nationals traveling abroad encounter no difficulties. However, given our mission, we are able to assist Burkinabè nationals who are victims of criminal acts, accidents, illness, death, natural or man-made disasters, civil unrest, or whose family needs to reach them in an emergency.

If you request a service from the Embassy or consulate abroad, staff will ask you to provide proof of Burkinabè citizenship, such as a passport or identity card.

By registering your trip online, you help location services in case of emergency, verify your status, and facilitate communication with your family or relatives.

Registration is voluntary and free of charge. We encourage you to consider registration as an integral part of your travel planning and safety.

  • How do I register?

The Consular Card is an identity document issued by the Embassy to registered Burkinabè citizens within its jurisdiction. All citizens of Burkina Faso are entitled to receive a consular card.

To obtain a Consular Card, register with the Embassy by presenting any document proving Burkinabè citizenship (passport, identity card, etc.).

  • How can the Embassy or Consulate help me while abroad?

Consular services are provided to Burkinabè nationals who work, live, and travel abroad. Consular services operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. A detailed list of services is available on our Consular Services page.

  • How will my information be used?

The Consulate at Burkina Faso missions abroad will use your protected information if necessary in the event of a disaster, emergency, or any other crisis.

Only authorized Consulate officials have access to the information, which will only be used in case of disaster, emergency, or other crisis. This enables authorized officials to respond — for example, to contact family members to verify the status of Burkinabè nationals traveling abroad who may have been affected by the emergency.

  • Registration and privacy?

The Consulate is committed to ensuring that any personal information received through the online registration process is protected from unauthorized disclosure.

The Consulate will not disclose the information you provide during the registration process to third parties (including family members) unless you have previously given written authorization to do so. In the event that family members inquire about your whereabouts, such requests will be forwarded to you. You may choose to inform the Consulate of your decision to respond or not to respond.

  • What is a Visa?

A citizen of a foreign country who seeks to enter Burkina Faso must generally first obtain a visa, which is placed in the traveler's passport — a travel document issued by the traveler's country of citizenship.

Some international travelers may be eligible to travel to Burkina Faso without a visa if they meet the requirements for visa-free travel. Please visit our Visa Services page for complete details on visa categories, requirements, and fees.

Studying in India

  • Can I work during my studies in India?

The student visa does not allow paid employment. Internships that are part of your programme are possible: ask your university.

  • My passport expires during my studies: what should I do?

Ask the Embassy for a renewal at least six months before expiry: apply online, then book an appointment for the fingerprints. Your visa and FRRO registration will then need to be updated.

  • Is consular registration compulsory?

It is voluntary and free, but strongly recommended: in a crisis, the Embassy can only help the people it knows about.

  • How do I get my Indian diploma recognised in Burkina Faso?

First have the diploma authenticated by the relevant Indian authorities, then have it legalized at the Embassy before you leave. Book an appointment for the “Legalization” service.

Living in India

  • I am coming for one month as a tourist: do I need to register with the FRRO?

Generally not: registration mainly concerns long stays (studies, employment, research…) and visas that expressly say so. The endorsement on your visa is what counts; if in doubt, check indianfrro.gov.in.

  • I lost my passport in India: what should I do?

Report the loss to the police (many states offer an online report) and keep the receipt. Then contact the Embassy for a new passport or a laissez-passer: see Passport services and Other documents. Your visa and FRRO registration will then have to be transferred to the new document through e-FRRO.

  • I am arrested or in hospital: will the Embassy be told?

Ask explicitly for the Embassy to be informed: every foreign national has that right. A relative can also alert the duty officer from the Emergency assistance page.

  • Can I drive in India with my Burkinabè licence?

Bring an international driving permit, obtained in Burkina Faso before leaving, to be shown with your national licence. For a long stay, ask the Regional Transport Office (RTO) where you live.
