Travel advice: India
Practical information for Burkinabè nationals travelling to or living in India: entry formalities, preparing your trip, safety, health and emergency contacts.
Entry formalities
Holders of a Burkinabè passport must obtain a visa before travelling to India. Depending on the purpose of the stay (tourism, business, studies, medical treatment, conference), the application may, for certain categories, be filed online on the official e-Visa portal of the Government of India, operated by the Bureau of Immigration, or with an Indian diplomatic mission. Categories, conditions, fees and durations change: check the official portal before travelling and beware of unofficial intermediary websites.
Depending on the type of visa and the length of stay, registration with the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO), through the e-FRRO online service, may be required after arrival. Check the endorsements on your visa.
Before you leave
- Passport: at least six months' validity on the date of arrival is generally required, as well as blank pages.
- Yellow fever: Burkina Faso is one of the countries where yellow fever is present. Travellers arriving from such countries are commonly asked to show the international certificate of vaccination against yellow fever; in India, travelling without it may lead to quarantine. Keep it with your passport.
- Insurance: take out travel insurance covering medical expenses and repatriation; treatment in private facilities can be expensive.
- Copies: keep paper and digital copies of your passport, visa, ticket and vaccination certificate, separate from the originals.
- Consular registration: let us know you are there by registering with the Embassy; this makes assistance easier in an emergency.

Safety and local laws
- Respect local laws and customs. Drug offences carry very severe penalties, even for small quantities.
- Comply strictly with the conditions of your visa: overstaying or carrying out an activity not covered by the visa can lead to fines, detention or deportation.
- Always carry a copy of your passport and visa.
- Be alert to scams (job, scholarship or business offers that seem too good to be true, fake intermediaries); do not hand your passport over to third parties.
- Take care on the roads and in crowds, especially during large gatherings and festivals.
Climate and health
- Intense heat, particularly from April to June in the north of the country, calls for regular drinking and avoiding exposure during the hottest hours.
- The monsoon, roughly from June to September, can cause flooding and disrupt transport.
- Protect yourself against mosquitoes (dengue, malaria in some regions): repellent, covering clothes, mosquito net.
- Drink sealed bottled or treated water; avoid ice and raw food of uncertain origin.
- In winter, air pollution can be very high in the north of the country, particularly in Delhi.
Money and communications
Carry more than one means of payment and inform your bank of your trip. Withdraw cash from machines in safe places. Buying a local SIM card generally requires showing your passport and visa.
