Travel advice: Indonesia

Practical information for Burkinabè nationals travelling to or living in Indonesia: entry formalities, preparing your trip, safety, health and emergency contacts.

Entry formalities

Holders of a Burkinabè passport need a visa to enter Indonesia. Applications are mainly made online on the official e-Visa portal of the Directorate General of Immigration of the Republic of Indonesia (Direktorat Jenderal Imigrasi), or with an Indonesian diplomatic mission. Categories, conditions, fees and durations change: check the official portal before travelling and beware of unofficial intermediary websites.

Online arrival forms (immigration, customs, health) may be required before landing: check with the Indonesian authorities before you leave.

Before you leave

  • Passport: at least six months' validity on the date of arrival is generally required, as well as blank pages.
  • Yellow fever: Burkina Faso is one of the countries where yellow fever is present. Travellers arriving from such countries are commonly asked to show the international certificate of vaccination against yellow fever. Keep it with your passport.
  • Insurance: take out travel insurance covering medical expenses and repatriation, including from remote islands.
  • Copies: keep paper and digital copies of your passport, visa, ticket and vaccination certificate, separate from the originals.
  • Consular registration: let us know you are there by registering with the Embassy; this makes assistance easier in an emergency.

Safety and local laws

  • Respect local laws and customs, in particular religious practices: dress modestly in places of worship and during religious festivals.
  • Drug laws are among the strictest in the world: penalties can include the death penalty.
  • Comply strictly with the conditions of your visa: overstaying or carrying out an activity not covered by the visa can lead to fines, detention or deportation.
  • The country is exposed to earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and tsunamis: find out the safety instructions where you are staying and follow the instructions of the local authorities.
  • Be alert to scams and do not hand your passport over to third parties.

Climate and health

  • The climate is tropical, hot and humid; the rainy season, which varies from island to island, can cause flooding and landslides.
  • Protect yourself against mosquitoes (dengue, malaria in some regions): repellent, covering clothes, mosquito net.
  • Drink sealed bottled or treated water; avoid ice and raw food of uncertain origin.
  • Drink regularly and protect yourself from the sun.

Money and communications

Carry more than one means of payment and inform your bank of your trip. Withdraw cash from machines in safe places. Using a local SIM card generally requires registration with your passport.

Emergency numbers

  • National emergency number: 112
