Travel advice: Nepal

Practical information for Burkinabè nationals travelling to or living in Nepal: entry formalities, preparing your trip, safety, health and emergency contacts.

Entry formalities

A visa is required to enter Nepal. For many nationalities, a tourist visa can be obtained on arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu and at certain land border crossings, or in advance from a Nepalese diplomatic mission. The Department of Immigration of Nepal provides an online form to be completed before arrival. The conditions applicable to holders of a Burkinabè passport, fees and durations may change: check the official website of the Department of Immigration before travelling.

If you travel through India, you need an Indian visa suited to your transit or stay.

Before you leave

  • Passport: at least six months' validity on the date of arrival is generally required, as well as blank pages.
  • Yellow fever: Burkina Faso is one of the countries where yellow fever is present. Travellers arriving from such countries are commonly asked to show the international certificate of vaccination against yellow fever. Keep it with your passport.
  • Insurance: take out travel insurance covering medical expenses and repatriation; if you plan a trek, check that it covers high altitude and helicopter evacuation.
  • Copies: keep paper and digital copies of your passport, visa, ticket and vaccination certificate, separate from the originals.
  • Consular registration: let us know you are there by registering with the Embassy; this makes assistance easier in an emergency.

Safety and local laws

  • Respect local laws and customs as well as places of worship; access to some temples may be restricted to worshippers.
  • Drug offences carry very severe penalties.
  • Comply strictly with the conditions of your visa: overstaying or carrying out an activity not covered by the visa can lead to fines, detention or deportation.
  • Avoid demonstrations and gatherings; strikes can disrupt travel.
  • Trekking in many areas requires permits: use licensed agencies and guides, never set off alone and tell your family your route.
  • The country is exposed to earthquakes; during the monsoon, landslides frequently cut off roads.

Climate and health

  • The climate varies greatly with altitude: heat in the southern plains, intense cold in the mountains.
  • Acute mountain sickness can be serious: climb gradually and descend as soon as symptoms appear.
  • The monsoon, roughly from June to September, can cause flooding and landslides.
  • Protect yourself against mosquitoes (dengue, malaria in some lowland areas): repellent, covering clothes, mosquito net.
  • Drink sealed bottled or treated water; avoid ice and raw food of uncertain origin.

Money and communications

Carry more than one means of payment and enough cash for remote areas, where cash machines are rare. Inform your bank of your trip. Buying a local SIM card generally requires showing your passport; network coverage is limited in the mountains.

Emergency numbers

  • Police: 100
