Travel advice: Thailand
Practical information for Burkinabè nationals travelling to or living in Thailand: entry formalities, preparing your trip, safety, health and emergency contacts.
Entry formalities
A visa is in principle required for holders of a Burkinabè passport. Applications are made online on the official Thai e-Visa portal of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Thailand. Visa exemption and visa-on-arrival schemes are changed periodically: check your exact situation on the official portal before travelling and beware of unofficial intermediary websites.
A digital arrival card (Thailand Digital Arrival Card) must currently be completed online before arrival: use only the official service of the Thai authorities.
Before you leave
- Passport: at least six months' validity on the date of arrival is generally required, as well as blank pages.
- Yellow fever: Burkina Faso is one of the countries where yellow fever is present. Travellers arriving from such countries are commonly asked to show the international certificate of vaccination against yellow fever. Keep it with your passport.
- Insurance: take out travel insurance covering medical expenses and repatriation; treatment in private hospitals can be expensive.
- Copies: keep paper and digital copies of your passport, visa, ticket and vaccination certificate, separate from the originals.
- Consular registration: let us know you are there by registering with the Embassy; this makes assistance easier in an emergency.

Safety and local laws
- Respect local laws and customs. Respect for the royal family is protected by law, and offences are severely punished, including for statements made online.
- Drug offences carry very severe penalties.
- Importing and possessing electronic cigarettes is prohibited and can lead to a fine or arrest.
- Respect places of worship and images of the Buddha: dress modestly and remove your shoes when asked.
- Comply strictly with the conditions of your visa: overstaying or carrying out an activity not covered by the visa can lead to fines, detention or deportation.
- Take care on the roads, especially on two-wheelers: a helmet is compulsory and a valid driving licence is required.
- Be alert to scams and do not hand your passport over to third parties.
Climate and health
- The climate is hot and humid all year round; the rainy season, roughly from May to October, can cause flooding.
- Protect yourself against mosquitoes (dengue, malaria in some border areas): repellent, covering clothes, mosquito net.
- Drink sealed bottled or treated water; avoid ice and raw food of uncertain origin.
- Drink regularly and protect yourself from the sun.
Money and communications
Carry more than one means of payment and inform your bank of your trip. Withdraw cash from machines in safe places. Buying a local SIM card generally requires showing your passport.
